About Europe

Europe is located entirely in the Northern Hemisphere and comprises the westernmost peninsula of the continental landmass of Eurasia. It is separated from Asia by the Ural Mountains, the Ural River, the Caspian Sea, The greater Caucasus, The Black Sea, and the waterways of the Turkish Straits.  

European culture can be called the root of western civilization, traced back to ancient Greece and Rome. Europe has always played a predominant role in global affairs. Many European Powers colonized the various regions of the Americas, almost all of Oceania and Africa, and most of Asia. Both the world wars took place in most parts of Europe. In 1949 the Council of Europe was formed to unify Europe and achieve common goals and prevent conflicts. This led to the formation of the European Union, which is a separate political entity.  

The boundaries of Europe were historically known as the boundaries of Christendom. There is a shared cultural heritage overlapping with the national cultures of the countries in the Union. This is often described as maximum cultural diversity with minimum geographical distances. Europe is a relatively secular continent and has seen a rise in immigration from other continents over the decades.
